A tribute to UK innovation

Leicester-based Clifton Packaging has once again been recognised for its innovation and creativity at the annual WorldStar Awards, adding yet another award to the company’s growing collection of accolades and once more firmly establishing the company as a global player. This year the company won an award for its Hopcraft Pouch, in the beverages award section. It was one of only two UK companies to achieve success in this category, alongside the Coca-Cola Bow from Pulse Flexible Packaging. Clifton Packaging was nominated for the global award scheme after having achieved a Silver Star at the UK Packaging Awards at the end of last year. Nominations for WorldStar Awards can only be made if the company has already won a major packaging award. Managing Director of Clifton Packaging, Shahid Sheikh OBE, was in Dusseldorf, Germany, for the glittering awards evening in May, where he received the award from Thomas L Schneider, President of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), which organises the awards. Mr Sheikh paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of the whole team at Clifton Packaging, and said the Worldstar Award was the ultimate accolade for a UK business, therefore a fitting reward for their efforts. “I am absolutely delighted to have won a WorldStar award for our HopCraft Pouch,” he said. “This product is a global first and has the potential to revolutionise the beer industry. The pack is unique. No other packs in the market act like this or contain the technology or innovation that this pack does. It answered the brief to create ‘a revolutionary way to experience beer’ and I am thrilled that the judges were also able to recognise its uniqueness and multiple innovations.” ‘at the forefront’ Thirty-six countries were represented at the awards, each in turn having fought off stiff competition from within their own countries to make it to the Worldstar heats. Mr Sheikh said: “This is truly a global award and to win is not only a great achievement for Clifton Packaging, but as a UK company, clearly helps us to demonstrate that the UK is at the forefront in the global packaging arena.” The award came in the same month that Clifton Packaging won the manufacturing award at the Asian Business Awards in the UK. Already this year the company has been included in the 1000 Companies To Inspire Britain list. It won the Manufacturer of the Year Award at the Made In The Midlands Awards and was also shortlisted for the SME Company of the Year and Export Award. It was a finalist for the Business Entrepreneur of the Year and International Trade Award in the Leicester Mercury Business Awards. It has also seen success with the EFIA 2017 and Manufacturing Awards 2017. Clifton Packaging, founded in 1981, is a privately owned family business specialising in the manufacture of packaging, packaging machinery and contract packaging, predominantly in the food sector. The company employs 75 people at its Leicester facility and has annual sales of more than £20 million.
