Cakes supplier slices order processing time with printers

Bakery conditions are often floury and humid so in order to produce key documents like invoices, delivery notes and barcode labels you need robust, reliable printers. Also, the short shelf-life of freshly baked products requires fast print speed to ensure goods are despatched quickly. Emma’s Country Cakes supplies brands like Sainsbury’s, Ocado and Asda as well as independent, national retailers and garden centres. Printing daily order sheets took staff three hours but a random visit to a supplier convinced the bakery’s owner, Emma Davies, that she needed to upgrade her existing printer to cope with her fast expanding enterprise.
She considered laser and other impact print devices but finally chose the reliable, fast performance of the TallyGenicom C6815, a line printer brand from Printronix LLC. It now takes staff just 15 minutes to print daily order sheets, slicing off 2.5hours/day in processing time. The printer is used primarily for standard multi-part invoicing/order sheets but can also produce barcode labels and other tractor-feed reports, if required. The bakery prints some 60,000 to 93,000 sheets/year. Emma did a seven-day ‘try before you buy’ option through Datatrade and the huge advance in print speed alone persuaded her to procure one. An expected lifespan of seven to 10 years further convinced her, as did the prospect of less consumables waste and lower energy consumption than the laser printers she had initially considered. The C6815 lineprinter is connected to the baker’s home area network (HAN) by Ethernet and uses a standard Tally emulation for printing.
“By significantly reducing print time we effectively regain some 80 days per year in extra productivity,” said Maria Thomas, of Emma’s Country Cakes.
