Innovative packaging professionals are continuing to push the limits of technical expertise according to David Wiggins, Chairman of the Starpack Advisory Group.
David applauded the efforts of those who entered the 2017 Starpack awards, and said judges had a ‘stimulating’ day looking through all the entries during judging day at The Boilerhouse, Grantham.
In total, nine Gold Stars, 13 Silver Stars, and 15 Bronze Stars were awarded.
This year’s judges included: Mike Swain, Independent Packaging Consultant, Pack IDS Ltd;
John Lamb, Owner, Look 360 Design Ltd; David McGowan, Innovation Realisation Director, PI Global; Alaster Yoxall, Engineering Design Principal Research Fellow, Art and Design Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University; Chris Peach, Head of Packaging and Design, Walnut Unlimited; Nikki Clark, Loughborough University; Brian Lodge, Design Manager, RPC Design;
David Wiggins; DRW Packaging, Starpack Advisory Group.
The winners received their awards at a ceremony at the Institute of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in London recently.
David Wiggins, said: “The entries this year showed the impact packaging has in a truly diverse range of industries.”
Paul Lowes, Designer and Technical Sales for Smurfit Kappa Leeds, received the Packaging Star of the Year Award, for his ‘Shop In A Box’ pack.
The judges said: “Paul demonstrates not only a great passion for intelligent design, but also a need for delivering the best solution through effective use of materials and structures. With focus on environmental priorities, commercial practicalities and the need for consumer inclusive design, his pack design shows attention to the right detail.”
Packaging Team of the Year was awarded to SAICA Pack and Diageo, for their collaborative spirits case optimisation project. The judges said: “This project entry clearly demonstrated the effective teamwork between business and across disciplines to deliver tangible results.”
