Europe’s approach to food and agriculture must change, and fast, say European national science academies.
The European Academies’ Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) recently staged a presentation and panel discussion in Brussels to debate the future of food and agriculture in Europe, with the launch of the report “Opportunities and Challenges for Research on Food and Nutrition Security and Agriculture in Europe”.
This report addresses pressing issues currently facing Europe, includingwhy and how European food consumption must change urgently to improve consumer health, including the over reliance on high calorie foods and meat
Why the impacts of farming and agriculture on human health and the environment, including food waste, need to be addressed now; why climate-smart food systems need to be implemented without delay; why and how the Common Agricultural Policy must change to keep Europe competitive; why Europe should not stall on genome editing, precision agriculture, and the use of large data sets; why Europe is currently missing out by not consistently incorporating research and innovation into food and agriculture.
Speakers included members of the European Commission, European Parliament, Bulgarian Presidency and more.
